Flinders Ranges

Overview

In the Venus Bay area (EL 2927), a number of promising diamond indicator mineral anomalies, have been located over shallow Bridgewater Formation cover. The geological situation is similar to Flinders Island with Pleistocene Bridgewater Formation calcareous sandstones overlying granitic basement.

Location

Venus Bay is located about 60 kilometres northwest of Elliston on the west coast of Eyre Peninsula.

Venus Bay

In April 2008, a helimag survey was flown over the Tawana–Flinders JV ground at Venus Bay. Numerous indicators have been reported by past explorers, but no primary kimberlite source was ever located. Multiple interpretations of the recently flown helimag data led to 45 targets being drilled for a total of 1,117 metres, by an aircore drill rig in July 2008. Drill material of basal gravels overlying the basement produced some picroilmenites. No indicators were reported from any drill material from within the granite basement.

Venus Bay

In the Venus Bay area, a review of the previous exploration results provided a significant improvement on the understanding of the sub-surface geology, which now highlights an untested area on the western side of the exploration licence.

Sampling

Collecting samples in the Venus Bay area - May 2008.
