Flinders Mines holds a 100% interest in diamond rights for this extensive project area consisting of five exploration licences totalling 3401 square kilometres located south of Lake Eyre in the centre of South Australia. Diamonds have been located to the north in the Peake and Denison Ranges eroding out of the Jurassic Algebuckina Sandstone. The sediments containing these alluvial diamonds are thought to have come from the south or southwest so Flinders is trying to locate the source by undercover drilling to the base of the Mesozoic sediments. The project area is on the Gawler Craton which Flinders believes is one of the most prospective areas for diamonds in Australia.
Location
The G2 project area is located approximately 70 kilometres northwest of Olympic Dam in South Australia's mid-north.
Drilling on the central Gawler Craton, following up kimberlite-type helimag anomalies from the ‘postage stamp’ surveys flown in 2008 was inconclusive. A total of 45 targets were drill-tested for a total of 1709.5 metres. Mafic bodies, magnetic schist and BIFs were intersected beneath the typically 30–50 metre thick Algebuckina Formation, but no kimberlites. Analysis of basal sediments for KIMs indicated promising results in the vicinity of Lake Phillipson.
